World Challenge - Kilimanjaro
James Martin
In 2011 I will be going to Africa with a team from my College at Seaford in East Sussex, it is organised by a company called World Challenge
We will have 3 weeks in Tanzania.
This will include a few days for acclimatisation. We will stay in local villages to experiance the local culture whilst treking through the hills to build up our fitness for the mountain..
6 days climbing the mountain. Kilimanjaro, is an inactive stratovolcano in north-eastern Tanzania the highest peak in Africa at 5,895 metres (19,341 ft), providing a dramatic view of the surrounding plains.
Although the highest mountain in the world is Everest at 8.848 m (29.029 ft) as that is in a mountain range you start from higher up. Everest's base camp is already 5.368 m up the mountain. At Kilimanjaro, you start from the bottom.
To compare Mount Snowdon is only 1,085 metres (3,560 ft) .
The Project. In the past teams from World Challenge have worked on many fulfilling projects that are greatly appreciated by the local communities. These include helping to provide a water supply to a primary school and painting classrooms. The project is a chance to interact on a more personal level with the local people and experience first hand the culture of Tanzania.
A few days to recover and then return home
The cost of this Expidition I have to raise myself. My parents were so glad when it was explained that they don't have to contribute anything at all and it was all down to me to to raise the money. This will be by sponsorship, donations, working or selling unwanted items.
Here you will find out how I am doing
Please, please, please if you want to help me individually or the Seaford team as a whole. There may be up to 22 of us, please do get in touch
